Congratulations to The Swell Season!!!

Airbag Radio would like to offer congratulations to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, collectively known as The Swell Season, on winning this year's Academy Award for Best Original Song.  The award was given for the song "Falling Slowly" from the film, Once.  Those who have had the opportunity to see this movie know that this award is well deserved.  Those who have yet to check it out, need to do so.  Both the film and the music are deeply emotional and honest.  Particularly noteworthy, is the fact that Glen and Marketa, the writers of all the music in the movie, are also the main actors, adding another level of honesty to the performances of the songs.  Watch the movie, then get the soundtrack.  In other Swell Season news, the duo will be performing at Oakland's Paramount Theatre on April 26th.  Unfortunately, Airbag Radio will be M.I.A. on this show as we'll be catching M.I.A. and others down in the desert that same day.  Tickets go on sale this Sunday at 10 AM.

Persepolis

Thus far, Airbag Radio has been strictly a music blog, but in light of the greatness that is Persepolis, it seems appropriate to break with tradition and make a non-music film recommendation. Persepolis is both a visually stunning and deeply emotional animated film. The story comes from an autobiographical graphic novel of the same name and takes place in war-torn Iran during the 1980's and 90's. The character development of the film is particularly impressive, as the viewer quickly identifies and relates to each character as a human, rather than a whimsical cartoon character. Both the struggles of the family in the film and the harsh realities of the situation in Iran, open the viewer's eyes to new understandings of this time in our history. We highly recommend this film and in our humble and limited experience this is could be said to be the greatest animated feature of all time.

Airbag Radio On SF's LIVE 105

All you Airbag Readers in the Bay Area, keep your ears tuned to LIVE 105.  Airbag Radio was interviewed today by the San Francisco radio station on the significance of Rage Against The Machine's self-titled debut album.  The interview was conducted as part of the station's Greatest Albums Of The 90's.  (Listen for James from San Ramon.)  Below is the original album synopsis provided to the station. Enjoy!

Rage Against the Machine had a major impact on my life both musically and philosophically. In fact, I remember waking up in the middle of the night to listen to this album. Musically, Rage is one of the best bands to have ever taken the stage. The band's intensity and energy is unparalleled. Rage's philosophy impacted me just as much as their music. Listening to Zack's de la Rocha's lyrics inspired me to begin questioning the beliefs that had been handed down to me and search for my own beliefs. I don't side with everything that Rage stands for, but I can't deny that my life wouldn't be the same without this band. Hands down, the best band of the 90's and the best album of the 90's.

Dayzed & Confused

Can't get enough of Radiohead's latest album, In Rainbows?  Then check out Amplive's newest project, Rainydayz Remixes.  Amplive (of Zion-I) spent some serious time with cutting, chopping, splicing and dicing In Rainbows.  The album has been reshaped into a hip-hop project featuring a mix of underground rappers, including Chali 2na of Jurassic-5 and Airbag Radio's fave MC, Del The Funky Homosapien.  Finally, our favorite band and our favorite rapper together at last!  Not to mention that Del gets down on our favorite In Rainbows track, Videotape.  Grab all the tracks here. This time the pricing isn't optional. It's free.
